Our Mission
The Center for Media Change users media and technology to 1) make professional journalism more viable in the digital age, and 2) leveraging online media and technology to foster economic development, civic engagement and create positive social change, especially in communities of color.
Our Approach
A key strategy to pursuing our mission is to address the “digital divide”, meaning the disparity in access to computers and the internet that hinders many low-income communities of color. We’ve built a web platform to democratize media funding, engaged community to build apps for government transparency and responsiveness, published a hyperlocal news site (Oaklandlocal.com) focused on amplifying underrepresented voices, and provided technology and social media training to youth, adults, local small businesses, and nonprofits. Since 2009, CMC has trained 350 adults and 60 youth under 18.
